Working Hard in the Media Work Shop

Working Hard in the Media Work Shop

After the hustle and bustle of interviewing the heat winner, we go upstairs, listen to the recording and pick the juicy quotes. We then write a quick brief of the overall heat, which are then included in the media release at the end of the day! (exciting)
And this is where we work!

Day Two at the Pro

After spending hours the night before studying up on the top world surfers, I felt confident going into the first day of competition with an idea of who I needed to know. Knowing we would get to put some of our PR skills into practice was certainly something to look forward too.

However, much to our surprise, our day started with a 7am walk into Coolangatta to collect fruit and newspapers for the media centre. This soon became our morning ritual and together with my fellow interns, Alex and Tegan we scanned the newspapers for articles relating to The Pro. This saw the start our college wall we were creating in the media centre, newspaper cut outs of the Quicksilver and Roxy Pro.

At last, the call came at 10.40, and the first round of the Roxy Pro kicked off. Finally we were put to work, and things got exciting. Our roll as the interns, was to watch the heat and record the interview with the winner, and teh loser of each heat. This was exciting as we were right in the middle of the action (and very close to the worlds best surfers). Once our recording was complete we heading back up stairs to the media centre and transcribed the juicy and newsworthy quotes of each interview and put in into context with an overall paragraph about the heat.

We sent these onto Will (our boss whilst at the Pro) who initially edited and helped us perfect our writing.

At the end of the day, our paragraphs were included in the ASP press releases.

Here is a snapshot of one of my quotes included in the Press Release.

“I seriously couldn’t have started my year better,” Stoyle said. “I didn’t know what to expect when I was coming into this event, I was hoping I could just get some high scores. They score really hard and you have to get some really good waves and surf really well to get in the excellent range, so I can’t believe I just scored a 9 and 8 in my first heat.”

First Press Conference at the Quicksilver and Roxy Pro

First Press Conference at the Quicksilver and Roxy Pro

Day one begun by attending the first press conference at snapper Rocks. Something new and exciting to begin our internship, and a great first introduction to a few of the top surfers of the tour.

As well as this, we spent our first day carrying out very important tasks to help prepare for the first day of competition. This included copious amounts of photocopying, moving tables and building ikea chairs.

We also met many people from the ASP team, and most importantly the team we would be working closely with; Steve, Will and Amy.
